Here's a list of the workshops Ampersand Duck is teaching in the next few months, a few that I've taught in the past, and an idea or two for possible workshops. For more details on each, click the links or email me. If you would like any of these workshops to come to your local area, get in touch. I'd probably be up for it if I'm available.

Artful Books:
Exploring Book Structures

July 7--11, 2008,
Sturt Winter School, Mittagong, NSW

Enter the wonderful world of making books! Folded, sewn, glued, altered, more fun than you can poke an awl at. Work through a range of structures and techniques from a simple concertina fold through to more complex formats and traditional sewn-on-tapes binding. Complete at least one book each day for five days. This course is for all levels of expertise.

(This class is a bookart intensive for any skill level. It's a LOT of fun. The last time I taught this class, the participants made over 100 books between 8 people (many of them complete beginners) in 5 days!)

From Print
to Book

August 9 & 10, 2008, Warringah Printmakers Studio, Sydney

Saturday September 13, 2008 (one day only), Megalo Access Arts Studio, Canberra

Also presented in 2007 as part of the NGA Print Symposium

A short workshop exploring various methods of converting prints to book structures.
A wonderful way to transform proofs and misprints, or to develop a distinct body of work within your print practice. Participants are welcome to bring their own prints, or can work with blank paper (provided) to create maquettes for later reference.

This can be a one-day workshop or a weekend workshop. One day is good for beginners, two days is more for a group of printmakers who have lots of material to work with and want to spend the second day practicing the things we learned on the first day.

Letterpress for Beginners

ANU School of Art Book Studio, 2006

This is not a mobile course, and can only be offered when there are no major projects using the press. Hopefully it will be offered again in 2009.

An introduction to setting and printing type on a cylinder proofing press. Participants will learn how to plan a publication, to hand-set type and to print it.

This course is recommended for anyone interesting in the traditional method of setting metal type by hand and printing it on a cylinder proofing press. Students will learn how to handle type-cases, to set type using a setting stick and transfer it to a chase ready to be printed. A project such as chapbook or broadsheet will be worked on as a group, with individual projects encouraged later in the course. This is a beginners class, so no previous knowledge is necessary, although a degree of good manual dexterity is required.
